AIM The American Institute for Michaels

In Memoriam

In remembrance.

It is with sorrow, and in the conviction that the small civic body owes the dead a quiet attention, that the Institute records below the names of departed members and friends. The list is incomplete; corrections and additions may be addressed to the Recording Secretary.

  1. Michael Faraday

    1791 — 1867

Honorary fellow of the Institute, conferred in retrospect by special resolution. We mark the anniversary of his passing each August by reading aloud, at the Boston seat, a brief passage from the eleventh series of the Experimental Researches.

  2. Michael Crichton

    1942 — 2008

Fellow in the second class of recognized Notable Michaels. The Institute regrets that the recognition was conferred posthumously and does not, on the whole, regard posthumous recognition as a satisfactory practice.

  3. Michael Halloran

    1928 — 2018

    Boston chapter

Father of the present Boston chapter coordinator. Mr. Halloran was not himself a member of the Institute but was, by the testimony of those who knew him, the kind of patient civic figure the Institute was, in its founding years, attempting to describe.

  4. Michael Tippett

    1905 — 1998

Fellow, conferred posthumously upon the unanimous recommendation of the Standing Committee on Notability. The Institute observes the anniversary of his birth by playing, at the Boston seat, a recording of The Mask of Time in its entirety.

  5. Mihály Kádár

    1934 — 2024

    Budapest chapter

Founding coordinator of the Budapest chapter. A retired schoolmaster of the small-town variety, Mr. Kádár brought to the chartering of the chapter a degree of patient seriousness the Institute will not soon see equalled. We extend our condolences to his family and to the chapter he leaves behind.

  6. Michael Glass

    1962 — 2025

    Chicago chapter

Member in good standing of the Chicago chapter from its chartering in 2021 until his sudden passing in the spring of 2025. The Institute remembers Mr. Glass for the small kindnesses by which he made the chapter's convenings the warmer for his presence.

  7. Michael Aoki

    1947 — 2023

    Tokyo chapter

Founding contact of what would, in 2022, become the Tokyo chapter. Mr. Aoki was, at the time of the chapter's formal chartering, too unwell to assume the coordinator's role, but was present in correspondence throughout the application process.

  8. Mick Halloran

    1955 — 2024

    Dublin chapter

Honorary Michael, conferred in 2017, in recognition of his support for the chartering of the Dublin chapter in the years preceding his lapse into ill-health. He was, by his own insistence, a Mick rather than a Michael.

Requiescant.
